Matt Halpern, born in 1983, took an early interest in music at a young age, getting his first junior drum set at just age 3, before switching to a full-sized kit at aged 6 and taking private drum lessons. He began performing throughout the northeast of the USA at a young age and released his first EP at age 17.
In 2012, Halpern launched Bandhappy.com, an educational website where likeminded students could take live one-on-one video lessons with various established artists. In 2016, Halpern developed the software company GetGood Drums, a sample-based drum software synthesizer. In 2018, Periphery left Sumerian Records and founded their own independent record label, 3DOT Recordings, which they use to this day. Also in 2012, Halpern formed a rock group called The Mothership with his Periphery bandmate, Spencer Sotelo. In 2020, this project was revived and renamed 'King Mothership'.
The answer is simple. Brass shells have been a favourite amongst drummers for many years due to their sound, response, and aesthetics. Unlike other shell materials, brass offers an incredibly versatile and balanced sound with open highs, mids and lows. Perfect for louder genres like rock and metal, brass is renowned for being quite loud. Although loud, you can just about use a brass snare in any style if you really want to cut through.
The MasterCast Die-cast hoops have more density and are more consistent in shape than triple-flanged hoops, which are manufactured by bending metal plates. These hoops make tuning more consistent and easier to achieve because the tension bolts always contact the hoop properly. Drums fitted with die-cast hoops also offer crisper attack, clear and resonant highs, and much more powerful rim shots.
The Matt Halpern Signature Snare Drum is also fitted with black/brass swivel tube lugs. These lugs offer minimal contact and low mass. This allows the drums to vibrate freely for ultimate resonance. STL Lugs feature a swivel nut that keeps the tension rods perfectly aligned to provide accurate and precise tuning.
