Constantly pushing the boundaries of science
Cane is a unique material. Its low density combined with incredible longitudinal rigidity makes this organic material very complex. And although recreating these properties in a synthetic material is convoluted and problematic, they're essential for producing a good reed.
This is where Legere's scientists come in. Legere manufactures all of their reeds from a material called polypropylene. This non-toxic plastic has a wide array of uses, and is commonly found in food containers, rugs, packaging, and many other products. But because of the flexibility of raw polypropylene, it is far too soft to use as a saxophone reed. To fix this issue, Legere puts the plastic through a process called orientation. This secret process is what makes Legere reeds so special.
Whereas traditional cane reeds need regularly changing, this Legere reed will last much longer thanks to its synthetic nature. And because Legere reeds do not absorb moisture, you can easily sanitise them with warm water and mild detergent.
Precision engineering
This is where science meets art. Legere understands the difficulties woodwind players have when playing cane reeds. Due to complex organic structure of cane, it is difficult to make every single reed the exact same strength in a box. This is why many woodwind players try out reeds before going on stage, and why some professionals even make their own. You don't get any off this hassle with Legere.
Each and every Legere reed is cut using a 3-axis, computer numerically controlled (CNC) cutting machine. This means that every reed is the perfect strength - every time. And since Legere makes their own material, there is an absolute zero possibility of any variation in structure. If you buy a Legere reed today, and another in two years time, they will be the exact same. Once they have been cut, the reeds are individually strength tested, delicately sanded and packaged by hand. It's this care and attention to detail that makes Legere reeds so special.
Reviews
“Let's just say this… I wish I had a reed "exactly" like this one every time I applied it to my mouthpiece! It has the "buzz", the edge, the projection, and the consistency up and down the alto sax. The notes speak a lot better than the Signature reeds. Bravo!” - Gerald Albright, American jazz saxophonist
