The Universal Audio SD-1 Standard Dynamic Microphone is a premium-quality cardioid microphone, suitable for both live and in the studio. Carrying the signature sound quality you've come to expect from Universal Audio, the SD-1 is no different. SD-1 has been designed for the modern producer, engineer, musician, podcaster, broadcaster and anyone else who requires high-quality vocal recordings with transparent sound. Engineered with UA's trademark craftsmanship and quality, the SD-1 is capable of recording anything from main vocals, drums, percussion, spoken word, acoustic and electric guitar, brass and much more. The dynamic capsule has been designed to offer a flat response from 50Hz - 16kHz, ensuring articulation and depth for a wide range of instruments. Combined with the high SPL rating, you'll be able to record virtually any sound source on virtually any stage or studio in the world, regardless of the volume level. High-SPL rating and headroom go hand-in-hand ensuring that you'll always have clean gain to record your sound source for professional-sounding recordings. Unlike other typical dynamic microphones, you won't need any additional gain before hitting your preamp, meaning you can keep your Cloudlifter at home and go to your show or recording session with less equipment!
Ideal for both stage and studio, the SD-1 features a cardioid polar pattern, boasting excellent off-axis rejection. When on stage, this cardioid pattern helps to effectively reduce the volume of nearby instruments outside of the microphone capsule to virtually null!
Built-in to the microphone are two switches to customise the sound of your SD-1. A low-cut filter allows you to attenuate frequencies below 200Hz with a gentle 6dB/octave slope. This is ideal for live use to reduce the volume of stage sound from instruments such as bass guitar or drums or for studio use where a tight low-end response is needed to blend seamlessly within the mix.
The second switch is an articulation boost that adds a subtle lift from 3-5kHz by 3dB. Adding this to your vocal or acoustic guitar performance lets it stand out from the mix with presence without sounding overbearing. Ideal for vocals, the 3-5kHz region is where vocals are most sensitive, allowing you to sit above a dense mix without the need for any volume adjustments.
What on the surface may seem like a conventional microphone, the SD-1 has some hidden tricks up its sleeve to make it more convenient to get studio-grade recordings. Covering the microphone capsule is SD-1's windscreen, perfectly made to measure to cover the microphone without being obtrusive to your recordings. This windscreen effectively reduces any harsh unwanted vocal discrepancies such as plosives (P & B sounds) as well as sibilance from 'S' sounds in your recordings for ultra-clean vocal performances. Singers from powerful pop vocals to driving rock vocals will feel comfortable singing directly into the microphone without the need for any external pop filters, allowing for more natural and clean performances.
Eliminating vibrational noises through any noisy fans or extraneous environmental noises is effectively performed by the internal shock mount. This is ideal for studios or stages with less than ideal acoustic properties where sympathetic vibrations from instruments, computer fans or other equipment cause rumbles through your microphone stand. Thankfully with the SD-1, you won't run into these problems and instead will enjoy a crystal clear recording with no unwanted artefacts.
Solving the problem that many stand-mounted microphones face, the SD-1 features a rear-mounted XLR connector. This allows you to position your microphone as close to your sound source as possible without the obtrusive cable blocking your passage to your instrument or vocalist.
Perfectly integrating with compatible Universal Audio hardware, the SD-1 can unlock a wide range of custom Apollo presets. These allow you to take the guesswork out of your processing by providing radio-ready EQ, compression and analog saturation settings. Designed specifically for vocalists, guitarists and spoken word, the Apollo Channel Strips make use of the premium emulations found within Universal Audio's plug-in collection, allowing you to focus entirely on the creative aspect of your session. Whether that's recording or arranging, you can take peace of mind knowing your recordings are up to professional standards.
